John W. Masters: Giving Back to the Community That Shaped Him

John Masters is a force in Canada’s non-profit sector, with over 30 years of leadership across health, arts, education, and community development. Born and raised in Ingersoll, Ontario, John credits the town—and its people—with shaping the values and work ethic that have guided his life and career.

“As I grow older and perhaps a bit wiser, I feel a profound ‘Calling’ not only to support charities in my current community of Calgary but, more importantly, to give back to the community that shaped me: Ingersoll. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support of my parents and the community that nurtured me through my formative years.”

“We were fortunate to graduate from IDCI and for some to pursue post-secondary education and others to seek careers be it in Ingersoll or other locations. Although we may not have always seen eye to eye with leaders like Jack Herbert and Currie Wilson back then, I now realize how much their leadership and mentorship, amongst others, contributed to our success.”

John has held senior roles including Vice President, Fund Development at Heart & Stroke Alberta, and President & CEO of Innovate Calgary, where he helped grow organizations through strategy, innovation, and effective governance. He currently serves on the boards of cSPACE, the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, the Sinneave Family Foundation, and the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance. His previous board service includes Operation Eyesight, Alberta Ballet, and the United Way of Calgary.

With a B.A. in Public Administration and Political Science from Carleton University, and completion of the Not-For-Profit Governance Program through the Institute for Corporate Directors, John combines academic insight with real-world experience. Known for his skill in relationship-building and strategy, he has become a trusted voice in non-profit leadership across Canada.

John lives in Calgary, where he enjoys cycling, skiing, public affairs, and time with family—but his heart has never left Ingersoll. In recognition of the town’s impact on his life, John is proud to offer a $20,000 matching grant, encouraging others to join him in giving back to the community that helped raise him.
